Palm 680 Series PhotoPalm has just released an update that allows the Palm Treo line of smartphones to support Microsoft’s Direct Push technology.  This marks a significant milestone on two counts.

For quite a while now, the only way to get push mail onto a non-Windows Mobile Treo smartphone was via various third-party add-on applications.  The convenience of finally getting native (and free) support of push mail would surely be a relief to many; be they individual or enterprise users.  This simply cannot be understated as a standard enterprise roll-out could be significantly delayed by the additional steps of installing and updating third-party applications.

Also, with Palm smartphones on-board, the momentum is now growing steadily in favor of the number of Direct Push compliant handhelds that are being sold worldwide.  Currently, Exchange Server 2007 with its superior Direct Push implementation is leading the front as well as third party products like DataViz’s RoadSync is bringing up the rear in terms of Windows Mobiles 2003 SE support.

With this in mind, it is easy to see why Direct Push is going to be a very widely adopted very quickly.  Once again, Microsoft has jumped onto the bandwagon (almost) too late, but has somehow managed to not only stay in the game, but to catch up, and very soon - to overtake.
