Looks like Windows Mobile 6.0 aka ‘Crossbow’ will be officially announced at 3GSM next week. In the meantime, Jason Dunn of Pocket PC Thoughts have the following information for us pertaining to its features:
• Full support for HTML e-mail
• Set "Out of Office" function directly on the device (with an Exchange server)
• New streamlined functioning of email client: one click delete, reply, etc. Set email flags for follow-up.
• Office Mobile now included, with support for reading and editing Office documents on the Smartphone
• Windows Vista synchronization with Windows Mobile Device Center
• Calendar ribbon in the calendar application gives you the ability to see your free/busy time easier
• Windows Live client
• Call History is now a part of the contact itself, so you can see when you last phoned that person, etc.
• Better Internet sharing via a new built-in application
It is obvious that the first three features - HTML e-mail, out of office reply as well as the ability to set e-mail flags and such, will require the presence of Exchange Server 2007. (See our earlier article on The Future of Direct Push). With regard to the Direct Push-related features introduced in 2007, the upcoming features in WM 6.0 starts to make sense.
By all accounts, Windows Mobile 6.0 looks to be an incremental upgrade with a number of very nice and improved features rather than a mega upgrade. However, the feedback seems that the overall speed and response of the interface is even snappier than WM 5.0.
Given that Windows Mobile 5.0 is already a rather good product, any form of improvement or upgrade is good news in my books; and probably well-worth an upgrade. Do stay tuned as we bring you the low-down on the technical details as they are announced in just a few days!
