I know, I know, unless one has been hiding under a rock for the last 2 months, "everyone" knows that. But just in case you don’t, yes Windows Mobile 6.0 has been officially released since the 1st of March 2007. It will probably be April or even May before we start seeing the new WM 6.0 devices start to appear on the market.
As usual, whether [Insert Name of Mobile Device here] will have WM 6.0 firmware upgrade available depends very much on the device manufacturer. And just as usual, you won’t find me crossing my fingers on that either.
It might be a bit hard to believe, but I certainly have not been under a rock. A a nutshell, a few things happened with this release:
- Windows Mobile plain ‘o "Pocket PC" (aka with touch-screen but no phone radio) edition is now Windows Mobile 6.0 "Classic" Edition
- Windows Mobile "Smartphone" (aka no touch-screen) edition is now Windows Mobile 6.0 "Standard" Edition
- Windows Mobile "Phone" (aka with touch-screen) edition is now Windows Mobile 6.0 "Professional" Edition
- Confused yet? For the low-down on the reason for this name-change, check out this excellent posting on the the Windows Mobile Team Blog.
- To check out what’s new in Windows Mobile 6.0, you can read the details in this MSDN article.
This is all very exciting I know. I have yet to decide how to proceed with this. Should I dwell more in-depth about the fundamental technical improvements? Should I examine the implications of its improved and more efficient push-mail support? Come on, any suggestions?
PS: Oh yes, you can download the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK here.
