Looks like VMware is moving for an IPO. As the virtualization market approaches full maturity, things certainly look set to move very quickly indeed in the next few years. Basically, the three major players at the moment are VMware itself, Microsoft’s Virtual Server, and the open-sourced Xen.

Just got a mail 5 minutes ago from Microsoft reiterating the new activation procedures - or should I say anti-piracy measures, built into Windows Vista. Whatever it is, given the prevalence of the Windows platform, being aware of the additional limitations built into Vista would probably be useful.
The salient points are as follows:

An article from Network World just caught my eyes. Much like what I wrote last week about The death of the anti-virus software, New approaches to malware detection coming into view notes that “traditional signature-based method to detecting viruses and other malware is increasing seen as an insufficient defense given the rapid pace at which attackers are churning out virus and spyware variants”.
While it appears that the three security vendors that dominate the antivirus market today have no intention of abandoning signature-based defense, they indeed acknowledge that the argument is strong for augmenting the decades-long approach of signature-based scanning and detection.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd has just announced a software application that will run on Windows Mobile 6.0, allowing it to work like a BlackBerry. Basically, a user would be able to toggle back and forth between the two platforms if they want, for example, to use the Windows Media Player to listen to music or to their Pocket PC software.
At the moment, RIM already offers a BlackBerry Connect e-mail application that can run on devices with other platforms, including Windows, Symbian and the Palm-based variation of the Treo from Palm Inc. However, this announced suite will fully emulate the BlackBerry OS, including support for BlackBerry email, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messaging and other applications developed for the BlackBerry platform. This includes the BlackBerry Mobile Data System (MDS) as well, which is being leveraged to create enterprise-grade connected applications.

I came across “Jim Rapoza’s 12 Ways to be a Security Idiot” on eWeek. If you have not seen this yet, I recommend that you take a look at this nifty piece.
Basically it contains some very nicely done graphical slides about the various (many) things that your typical “Security Idiot” would do that will compromise IT security. Most of which no doubt you would be already familiar with: like setting one’s password as “password”, succumbing to Nigeria scams, opening attachment that are executables, disabling one’s firewall, running anti-virus with outdated definitions and so on and so forth.

The BlackBerry wireless e-mail service from RIM (Research In Motion Ltd) seems to have suffered a widespread outage starting from Tuesday evening in the U.S.
According to NewsChannel4, “Officials with RIM said they are trying to reset the system and that their concern was with the backlog of data, which will rush through when it comes back on line, could cause a bigger problem”.
